ACHIEVEMENTS - 2003
Each year,
Sport Athletes of the Year are nominated by coaching staff.
These athletes have displayed,
during their
scholarship year, an exceptional level of sports performance,
a commendable attitude to competition, persistent dedication
to learning and strong community support.

2003 Tobin
Family Award recipient
- ANITA COWLEY
2003 was
Anita's first
year as a scholarship holder in the BlueScope Steel
Individual Athlete Program
and saw Anita gain
number 1
junior ranking and
place
fourth in open-age competition at the
Kayak
Nationals.
A seventh at
the
2003 World Freestyle Kayaking Championships in Graz, Austria
was her career highlight to date.
She regularly
travels to Penrith to train and compete
in kayaking as well as
cross
train for
swimming, cycling, running,
and triathlon.

2003
Disability Athlete of the Year - SAM HARDAKER
The highlight of Sam’s year was his
participation at the Pan Am World Games in Argentina where
he finishied third in the 50m freestyle and taking 7
seconds off his PB in the process.
In 2003, Sam broke World Records in the
100m and 200m Individual Medley as well as 3 Australian
17yrs records. He dominated NSW Sports Council for the
Disabled meets, grabbing a haul of 5 gold medals at the
Championships and setting 16 records in one meet in
August.

2003 Cricket
Athlete of the Year - ERIN BURNS
At just 15 years of age, Erin has represented
the CHS Open team, plays with Sydney Senior Club Balmain,
and gained selection in the NSW U17 Women's Team. She
is an outstanding all-round athlete and competes in NSW
track and field level and an Australian Javelin Champion.
Erin also enjoys surfing and playing soccer.
Erin’s sporting goal is to make the Australian Women’s
Cricket Team. 2003 was Erin’s second year in the Academy. |

2003 Cycling Athlete of the Year - AMEIL CAVALIER
Amiel is regarded as one of
the best young downhill mountain bike riders in Australia.
He travelled to Switzerland in 2003 for the Junior Downhill
World Championships - achieving an 18th place in a field of
the world’s best junior riders.
Amiel is the National Series Downhill U17 Champion,
Australian Inter-schools Champion, NSW State Series U17
Champion, and came 2nd in the U19 division of the Australian
Downhill Championships. |

2003 Golf
Athlete of the Year - MICHAEL DAVID
This 16 year old was selected in the
NSW Junior Squad - the top 9 juniors in the state. In
the Jack Newton International Junior Classic, Michael
finished 2nd against interstate and overseas
competitors. Michael is ranked number 1 in the NSW Grading
List for 16-year boys.
He was awarded the 2003 Jack Newton Junior
Golf Foundation “Spirit of the Foundation Award”. 2003
was Michael’s 2nd year in the Academy. |
