Program Benefits

The Illawarra Academy of Sport (IAS) is an independent sporting organisation that provides the opportunity and encouragement for talented athletes to achieve excellence in sport.

The benefits of an IAS Hockey Scholarship program, is based on developmental activities which will enhance progress to higher levels within hockey. Scholarships are offered for a twelve-month period, and scholarship athletes are expected to attend these sessions in addition to club and representative commitments.

The benefits of an Academy hockey scholarship include exposure to high quality coaching, individualised skill and technical training, sports science and fitness training, uniforms and specialised training equipment, personal development activities, education sessions and competition.

The program includes both male and female squads. Coaching sessions are held at Illawarra Hockey Centre Unanderra, University of Wollongong, Croom Rd Sports Complex, Albion Park and Welby, Southern Highlands.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Scholarship, athletes must:

·         Reside within the Southern Council Group (SCG), Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee

·         Be a registered with Hockey NSW through an Association within the Southern Council Groups.

·         Between the ages of 15 to 17 at the beginning of the 2011/2012 scholarship.

Selection Criteria

Satisfy the eligibility criteria and selection process;

·         Demonstrate potential to be selected for Hockey NSW state teams within 12 months.

·         Complete the performance standards

·         1st year athletes must be available to attend an interview in the second week of September

·         Demonstrate dedication to improving performance.

·         Display an ability to apply coaching & technical instruction.

 Hockey NSW, hockey associations within the Southern Council Group region and is sponsored by Credit Union Australia.

Costs

The Academy covers the majority of program costs. Scholarship holders are required to pay for a uniform contribution, costs for tours and camps and optional squad photos. The cost to scholarship holders in 2012 is anticipated to be no more then $500 which includes participation in the Academy Games in Wollongong and a uniform contribution.
