Program Benefits

The Illawarra Academy of Sport (IAS) is an independent sporting organisation that provides the opportunity and encouragement for talented athletes to achieve excellence in sport.

Scholarships are awarded based on the most recent performances. The intent of this program is to assist athletes, and not duplicate assistance for athletes provided by scholarship programs offered by other groups.

The scholarship program is based on developmental activities, which will enhance progress to national and international competition within the athlete’s chosen sport. Scholarship are offered for a twelve-month period and scholarship athletes are expected to attend all sessions in addition to club and representative commitments.

The IAS Individual Athlete Program provides a comprehensive sport education program to assist with improving performances. In 2012 the program will also offer financial assistance to be claimed by athletes for expenses incurred in training for or competing at national and/or international events. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Scholarship, athletes must:

·         Reside within the Southern Council Group (SCG), Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee

·         Must be a member of the State Sporting Organisation within the sport

·         Between the ages of 14 and 17 during 2012.

·         Special consideration may be given to cyclists outside the eligible age, subject to the approval of the IAS Board.

Selection Criteria

Satisfy the eligibility criteria and selection process;

·         Demonstrate dedication to improving performance.

·         Currently competing at National level OR.

·         Demonstrate/possess the potential to compete at International level within eighteen months.

Nomination Endorsement

To complete your nomination you must also get your relevant state or national sporting organisation to complete “IAP-SSO Recommendation Form”, and send it into the IAS academy.
