Program Benefits
The Illawarra Academy of Sport (IAS) is an independent sporting organisation that provides the opportunity and encouragement for talented athletes to achieve excellence in sport.
The scholarship program is based on developmental activities which will enhance progress to higher levels within lawn bowls. Scholarships are offered for a twelve-month period, and scholarship athletes are expected to attend these sessions in addition to club and representative commitments.
The benefits of an Academy Lawn Bowls Scholarship includes exposure to high quality coaching from the regions leading lawn bowls coaches, individualised skill and technical training, sports science and video analysis, camps and tours, fitness testing, uniforms, lawn bowls-specific education sessions, and personal development activities in areas including sport psychology and nutrition.
Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club is the major sponsor and primary training venue, however some training sessions may still be held at other Bowling Clubs throughout the Southern Councils Group.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a Scholarship, athletes must:
· Reside within the Southern Council Group (SCG), Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee
· Be a playing member of a lawn bowls club affiliated with RNSWBA through Zone 16, Zone 7 or Zone 5.
· Between the ages of 15 to 18 at the beginning of the 2011/2012 scholarship.
· Have represented at Zone or District level or higher, or have the potential to play at a Zone or District representative standard.
Selection Criteria
Satisfy the eligibility criteria and selection process;
· Demonstrate through past performance and/or potential capacity, the potential to improve performance to a high level.
· 1st year athletes (and parents/carers) must be available to attend a short interview.
· Demonstrate dedication to improving performance.
· Display an ability to apply coaching & technical instruction.

The Academy Cycling Program is supported by:
Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club, RNSWBA, Zone 16 Bowls (Illawarra), South Coast District Bowls and bowling clubs of the Wingecarribee.
Costs
The Academy covers the majority of costs associated with the scholarship program. Scholarship holders are, however, required to contribute to some components of the program such as uniform, squad photos and any tours/camps. A small group of athletes was be invited to attend the Academy Games in Armidale, in 2010, the cost of this tour was $350. Additionally, a squad trip to Merimbula to compete against other academies cost $185 per athlete.
